Tree Bands and Traps

Several different methods exist to install a well-working tree band to combat the fall cankerworm. None of the bands use pesticides or other toxic materials. All forms of tree bands start with a layer of batting wrapped around the tree, which prevents the female adult cankerworms from crawling underneath the band to reach the top of the tree. The traditional banding method covers the batting with layer of tarpaper, which is then stapled to the tree. A film of StikNStop™ sticky insect trapping material is spread over the tarpaper. A second form of trap, known as Bug-Barrier™, covers the batting with a stiff plastic film coated with a sticky adhesive facing the tree.

The third type of trap has been developed by Midwood Tree Banding (MTB) of Charlotte and uses a layer of stretch wrap over the batting, covered with a film of StikNStop™ to trap the cankerworms. MTB’s trap needs no staples or adhesives to attach the trap to the tree, and has proven to be weather and squirrel resistant as well as aesthetically pleasing. Midwood Tree Banding installs its new traps at roughly half the cost of the two older types, making it an inexpensive and effective method of banding trees for the fall cankerworm. MTB’s bands have the additional environmental advantage of generating a low volume of waste when the bands are removed in the spring.
