Why You Should Band Your Trees

Charlotte, North Carolina is a growing southern city of more than a half-million people and prides itself on the beauty of its mature tree canopy. Charlotte’s beautiful canopy is being damaged in many of the city’s neighborhoods by a population explosion of a native insect called the fall cankerworm (Alsophila pometaria). In its larval stage, the fall cankerworm feeds on the buds and new leaves of a wide variety of trees, including oaks, maples, hickories, ashes, poplars, and dogwoods.
